What if the same evolutionary process that occurred here on Earth occurred on some fraction of the worlds in these star systems? Are all of their societies identical to ours, dividing their world into ‘nations’ with imaginary lines called ‘borders’ and building weapons capable of destroying their planet to move or prevent movement of these imaginary lines?Or might intelligent beings be able to work out other options?
Might at least one of these groups found solutions to the problems that threaten to destroy our race?If it could be done anywhere, why not here? This book explores the capabilities of thinking beings in general (which includes humans) to alter their ‘modes of existence’ or societies. It shows that only a tiny fraction of the possible modes of existence that can be imagined have actually existed. We did not choose the conditions of our birth, so we did not choose what modes of existence or societies to be born into. However, now that we are here, we have the ability to go over the options, figure out what is possible, and decide if one of the possible societies can meet our needs better than the societies we were born into.
If we decide we want something different (perhaps after a global internet forum) we can formulate a plan to move to the other society and have an global election (again, perhaps over the internet) to decide if the majority of the living members of our race want to stay with what we have, or follow the plan to get to something else. This book has a simple premise: If we ever want to have some other ‘modes of existence’ or ‘societies,’ we need to start by accepting that we are capable of more, and then look for the other options.
